“Learning is experience, everything else is just information”- Albert Einstein
A key component of the Muktangan model is our ‘Integrated School and Teacher Education Programme’. We believe that learning is a process which occurs through experience and reflections. Children are not just passive receivers of information; they are also active contributors in the classroom. Our extensive school programme aims at addressing major gaps in the mainstream education system by providing conducive learning environments.

How Do We Do This?

  • 3 groups of children in the classroom with a teacher-student ratio of 1:14 leading to individual student engagement
  • Partnership between teacher and student in the learning process
  • Child-friendly infrastructure which supports a wide range of learning activity
  • Making learning fun through interaction and activity-based learning
  • Students actively construct their own understanding through enquiry, discussion and exploration
  • Differential learning strategies tailormade to suit the learning needs of every child
  • Teachers are developed from the same community as the students leading to effective bonding

School Highlights

Enabling all round development is a learning approach which aims at helping children establish a relationship with the natural world through a multitude of sensory experiences. Children from underserved educational communities lack the necessary conditions to foster their overall development. Our school programme concentrates on the physical, emotional, psychological and social needs of every student in the following ways-

Holistic Education

To facilitate the overall development of every child, we have established the Holistic Education Department. Along with academics, we encourage learning through activities helping students hone their talents and discover their interests with all children developing in sports, physical education, music, dance, art and drama each with its own events.

Career Guidance and Mentoring

In partnership with Antarang Foundation, we co-designed a Career Ready programme – World of Exposure – to deliver multi-disciplinary vocational training to Grade 8 students orienting them about different careers and job prospects. We have also partnered with Lighthouse for a “one-on-one” mentoring programme, connecting children from underserved communities with working professionals.

Socio-emotional Development

We have a dedicated team of counsellors and community support workers who work towards the well-being of students, teachers and parents through initiatives such as counselling services and workshops. We also have Quality Circle Time (QCT) sessions which foster development of values and skills that are conducive to nurturing emotional awareness and building effective relationships.

Mukt Minds

We strongly believe that children must be equipped with skills to grow and succeed in life. Our 1-month life-skills programme- ‘Mukt Minds’ was initiated to provide learning opportunities based on 21st century skills for Grade 10 students, gearing young learners in the areas of career guidance, self-awareness, action research projects and communication skills.

Inclusive Education

We are guided by the philosophy of inclusiveness and hence support the development of every child. Children with special needs are supported by our Learning Resource Group (LRG) teachers on a one-to-one basis while also receiving classroom support. We have also collaborated with Ummeed Child Development Center and the Maharashtra Dyslexia Association who help enhance the team’s knowledge and skills.

Blended Learning

This is an approach to education which combines virtual learning with traditional classroom-based learning. We aim at developing 21st century skills with a blend of technology-based practices and face-to-face instructions. In the new digital age, blended learning offers a highly flexible opportunity for continuous learning enabling students to explore the course comprehensively. We are implementing blended learning in our schools through the Kids for Science (KFS) programme helping children strengthen their conceptual understanding.

Nutrition Program

Our nutrition programme provides a healthy, protein-rich snack and fruit to every child in Muktangan on a daily basis. We also understand that our teachers and teacher educators require nutrition to deliver their responsibilities in the classroom and hence have extended our nutrition programme to them as well as to our trainees in our pre-service teacher education programme.

Library and Information Communication Technology

Our well-stocked library and guided reading programme helps children enhance their imagination and reflective thinking. Students in our 7 schools have access to a fully equipped computer center jointly developed by IIT Bombay and InOpen Technologies. Students enjoy our “Computer Masti” curriculum which includes computer literacy, process thinking, logic, problem solving and programming.

Community Connect

Our parents are an extremely important component of the triad and key stakeholders in the development process. Today, the Muktangan model is impactful because our parents advocated the programme to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and have continued to support us ever since. We look at different ways of engaging parents in our school operations by involving parents in our programmes and parent-teacher meetings (PTM).
